Magical Cappadocia’s natural beauty and historical sites must be seen. One of the most popular touristic areas in Turkey, this region in Central Anatolian is enchanting, offering visitors unique volcanic rock formations, underground ancient cities and churches, and stunning valleys.
Described as having a moon-like landscape, the volcanic rock backdrop is gaining more worldwide popularity every year. Serviced by two local airports, this picturesque area drew nearly two million visitors in the first 10 months of 2021. Stunning countryside, good local shopping, and cozy hotels make this a four-season destination.
Book yourself a stay at one of the many boutique cave hotels and then start exploring. Many visitors start their day with a sunrise hot air balloon ride giving them a bird’s eye view as they float, dip, and weave their way through the unique landscape. After a leisurely Turkish breakfast, there are many cultural and athletic activities that you can do. Many opt to do a combination of the best that the region has to offer.
There is trekking and horseback riding through the valley for nature lovers. Photography fans will also love finding the perfect spot to take a shot with the fairy chimneys formed over 60 million years ago or panoramas with hot air balloons in the background. Some of the most beautiful fairy chimneys are part of the Goreme and Zelve Open-Air Museums, where you can visit ancient dwellings and churches inhabited millennia ago. For more history, visit the ancient underground cities, some eight floors underground which were used as hiding spots for early Christians.
After a day of exploring there are multiple vineyards in the Urgup area that offer wine tastings. It is also popular to visit the town of Avanos, known for its clay procured from the Kizilirmak River to purchase pottery or try your hand at making your own. Take the opportunity to visit some of the other villages and towns, notably Goreme, Uchisar, and Mustafapasa, with their historical centers and restaurants with delicious regional foods.
Surreal, serene Cappadocia is a place that you will fall in love with. Get amazed with the incredible experiences that this region has to offer just a short flight or drive away from most major cities in Turkey.
