Pets are now allowed to travel alongside their owners on public transportation in Istanbul. The Istanbul
Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) made this new decision public on October 4,
which is also World Animal Day.
A group of experts became part of a higher committee to
decide the new conditions regarding the matter of pets being allowed on public
transport.
Animals such as cats, dogs, guide dogs, and birds are
allowed to ride the metro, ferries, and trains all day as long as they weigh
less than 5 kilograms.
The Daily Sabah
reported that bigger animals are only allowed to ride public transport for
limited hours, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The dogs must have leashes and muzzles, the cats should be
in their bags and cages, and birds should also be in cages while on public
transport.
Dangerous and harmful animals that can threaten the
passengers' well-being, such as insects, reptiles, wild birds, etc, are still
not be allowed to board the mass transportation facilities.
Turkish people are famous for loving animals and caring for
street dogs and cats and it is this love that led to this decision.
